Still Blundering Into Sense”: Maria Edgeworth, Her Context, Her Legacy


 

Rome, December 15-16, 2017 

 

We are pleased to invite contributions for the forthcoming conference “Still Blundering Into Sense”: Maria Edgeworth, Her Context, Her Legacy, that will be hosted by the Department of Education, Università Roma Tre (Roma, Italia), to celebrate Maria Edgeworth’s 250th anniversary. The conference will be the occasion to present unpublished papers and works in progress on Maria Edgeworth, her contemporaries and her legacy in the many fields she explored, and inspired people to work on. In parallel with the 250th anniversary of Edgeworth’s birth, the conference also intends to mark the 200th anniversary of the publication of the novel Harrington, recently translated into Italian by Raffaella Leproni with an introduction by Carla De Petris. 

The conference will be held under the patronage of the Edgeworth’s Society, CRISIS (Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale per gli Studi Irlandesi e Scozzesi – Roma Tre), of Studi irlandesi. A Journal of Irish Studies (Università di Firenze), AIA (Associazione Italiana di Anglistica), and ANDA (Associazione Nazionale Docenti di Anglistica). 

Ian Campbell Ross (Trinity College Dublin), Aileen Douglas (Trinity College Dublin), and Susan Manly (University of St Andrews) have agreed to give a talk for the conference; Eiléan Nì Chuilleanain, our guest within the EFACIS (European Federation of Associations and Centres of Irish Studies) Irish Itinerary program, will offer a talk, and a reading of some of her poems on Edgeworth. 
 

 

 We invite scholars dealing with the formidable Maria to send proposals for a 20-minute contribution. Related topics include, but are not limited to:

An abstract of maximum 250 words in English and a short bio-note should be sent by 10th September to 250edgeworth@uniroma3.it . Accepted speakers will be notified by 30th September; they will be kindly asked to pre-register for the conference within 31st October, filling the form which will be provided and paying the early-bird fee (30€).
